In connection with growing attention to the Northern Sea Route the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) builds 12 icebreakers and ships of strengthened ice class for the Arctic on its own shipyards. The head of the USC Aleksey Rakhmanov told about it in an interview to “Interfax”.
Worldwide amounts of transportations are steadily increasing. Countries compete in building of giant tankers and bulk carriers. Over 10 milliard tonnes per year are transported by sea today, what makes about 80-90 percent of the global cargo turnover. There is growing interest in construction of large icebreakers, oil platforms and creation of new water objects. Attention to the Northern Sea Route and the Arctic in general greatly increased, as Aleksey Rakhmanov notes.
According to him, all this raises the question on re-equipment of the domestic scientific and research fleet, otherwise Russia may be chronically behind in the competition for a place in the World Ocean.
Now the shipyards of the Corporation continue construction of twelve icebreakers and ships of strengthened ice class. Three of them are the most powerful domestic nuclear-powered icebreakers of the project LK-60. In parallel, enterprises of USC of the North-West region conduct modernization of capacities, including for future production of the promising nuclear-powered icebreaker “Leader” with the capacity 120 megawatt.
Aleksey Rakhmanov reminds that shipbuilding is quite a long production cycle. Years pass from the initial design of a ship until its transfer to a customer.
It is unwise to deny the problems that existed in the branch, as he notes. The USC was created exactly to solve these problems. This year the corporation celebrates its 10th anniversary.
According to him, now the situation has changed cardinally. External events led to solving the issue of import substitution, providers from Ukraine and from countries of the European Union were replaced with Russian ones. Control over cooperation was strengthened; more active work is conducted with customers in order to reduce potential time costs on this stage.
