Nenets people of Yamal sang ancient legends to scientists for the entire collection

The scientific center for study of the Arctic will publish “Folklore of Nenets people of Yamal”. The new book will be released in late 2018. It will include texts of epic songs from the archive of the newspaper “Nyaryana Ngerm” published since 1969 under the heading “Literature newspaper” and also art-works of verbal folklore recorded at different times from words of inhabitants of Yamalskiy and Priuralskiy districts. Following specialists worked on compilation of the collection: an expert in Nenets language Neiko Yangasova, the chief researcher of the Institute of Philology, SB RAS, doctor of philology, Professor Natalia Koshkaryova, a researcher of the sector of ethnology at the center for study of the Arctic Stella Serpivo and the head of the sector, candidate of historical sciences Galina Kharyuchi. This information was given in the scientific center for study of the Arctic.
The aim of the publication is to preserve verbal folklore, language, culture, traditions and customs of Nenets people. According to the information given in the sector of ethnology, the collection includes epic songs “syudbabts”, which present ancient legends. Heroes fight for preservation and continuation of the family, observation of laws and norms of the tribal society. According to the scientists, these texts are of great cognitive value and can be used by teachers of Nenets language, students of pedagogical colleges and higher education institutions, teachers of national schools and workers of culture. They will be interesting for all amateurs of native language and culture. The scientists plan to continue publishing art-works of verbal folklore.
The specialists of the scientific center for study of the Arctic conduct many-year work on forming of the Folklore archive of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, materials for which are being collected also within folkloristic, ethnographic and linguistic expeditions to national settlements and nomadic camps. In summer of 2018 two such expeditions took place – to Yamalskiy and Shuryshkarskiy districts. More than 10 samples of folklore materials were collected there.
