Russian vessels made the transit trip on the Northern Sea Route in the western direction in December of 2016 - January of 2017 for the first time in history of the Arctic navigation.

The caravan under piloting of the nuclear-powered icebreaker of Atomflot “50 Let Pobedy” included the Arctic shuttle tanker of Sovcomflot “Shturman Ovtsyn”, the ships Audax and “Arktika-1”.

The trip was started in the Bering Strait on the 21st of December and was completed in the Gulf of Ob of the Kara Sea on the 3rd of January. In conditions of the polar night and in difficult ice conditions the caravan overcame about 2400 nautical miles, as TASS reports. Then the tanker of Sovcomflot proceeded independently for loading to Cape Kamenniy in the Gulf of Ob.
“Shturman Ovtsyn” is a vessel of the serial arctic shuttle tankers ordered by Sovcomflot within the long-term contract with the company “Gazprom Neft” and is designed for year-round delivery of crude oil from the Yamal Peninsula to the port of Murmansk.
