In the Kara Sea the detachment of combat ships and support vessels of the Northern fleet of the Russian Navy met with the nuclear-powered icebreaker “Vaygach”.

The conference on further joint actions in crossing of Matisen and Vilkitsky Straits took place on its board. The sixth Arctic expedition of surface forces of the Northern fleet began on the 10th of August from Severomorsk. The detachment of the combat ships and vessels is making the trip from the Yenisei Gulf to the New Siberian Islands. The situation in this area is difficult. According to ice reconnaissance, drifting ice floes and icebergs can be seen in the straits. “Vaygach” will support the detachment of the ships through the ice-dangerous areas.

The detachment includes the large anti-submarine ship “Severomorsk”, the big landing ship “Kondopoga” and support vessels. On the ninth of September “Severomorsk” conducted military exercises on their security and defense. On the same day the hydrographic ship “Senezh” joined the detachment. The ship is conducting scientific and practical researches in the Arctic, as neftegaz.ru reports. The expedition will take several weeks, during which the specialists need to perform a wide range of activities on study of poorly explored regions. Thus, it is planned to collect new data necessary to update nautical charts, guidelines and manuals for navigation, to examine and inspect geodetic points, to explore coastlines of the archipelago Novaya Zemlya.
