The largest expedition since the time of the USSR continues its work. The Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker «Yamal» is now in the Kara Sea and is arriving to borders of the Arctic.
This trip is the largest polar expedition in modern history.
The task of the expedition is to conduct researches in the district of the Kara Sea, the Laptev Sea and in the district of New Siberian Islands. The received data will be interpreted. 3D models of ice formations will be made on their basis for informational support of geological prospecting and designing of oil and gas extracting constructions.
Cosmic satellites, a helicopter, an unmanned flying device, an apparatus for underwater survey and other scientific equipment were used for fulfillment of the set tasks by the icebreaker, as it is informed on the website megatyumen.ru.
«Yamal» is a Russian nuclear-powered Arktika-class icebreaker. Nuclear reactors allow the ship to go to long voyages. It goes with speed in 20-25 kilometers per hour, at that, it cuts ice floes with the thickness up to 3.5 meters.
