Each fifth person went to the battle front from Yamal (In 1941 in total 49 thousand people lived in the region, 8982 of them went to the battle front).
All of them bravely fought for peace and freedom of their Motherland. Each fourth – 228 – did not come back. 1881 died on battle fields, 172 were gone missing, 228 died of wounds in hospitals. 8 people of Yamal were awarded with the highest military award – the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union.
By the information given in the press-service of the governor of Yamal, now 55 participants and disabled people of the Great Patriotic War, 653 workers of home front, 29 people awarded with the badge «The Resident of Blockaded Leningrad», 57 former minor prisoners of concentration camps, ghettos and other places of detention, 114 widows of war participants live in Yamal.
The wide complex of measures of social support is given to veterans in Yamal. Among them there are: provision of housing, compensation of expenditures for housing and communal services, help in paying for communication services, cost of treatment in sanatoriums and health resorts and travel there, allowances, financial assistance to memorial dates and lump-sum payments, socio-medical care at home.
People of Yamal remember and respect heroic deeds of their grandparents and great-grandparents – search groups work in the region, there are monuments to warriors-winners, which are maintained properly. Traditional actions such as «The Ribbon of Saint George», «The candle of memory», «The parade of the winners» are conducted.
