In July archeologists of Yamal will start excavations of the ancient settlement Ust-Poluy

On the third of July a group of researchers of the scientific center for exploration of the Arctic will start excavations of the ancient sacred place Ust-Poluy, which is situated on the cape in the town Salekhard.
Employees of the Museum-exhibition complex of Shemanovskiy, students of the faculty of history of Ural Federal University and all people, who want, will participate in the archeological excavations. The organizers will give necessary tools to them. The work will last during one month.
The ancient sacred place Ust-Poluy is a unique monument of archeology. Scientists learnt that it had been the center of sacral life of ancient peoples of Yamal. Besides, spreading of such technological novelties as metal melting, spinning, making items of bone went through this location. The monument was discovered in 1932 – at building of the air harbor workers found ancient artifacts made of stone, ceramics and bone. Their bigger part is contained in the museum of anthropology and ethnography of Peter the Great (Kunstkamera) at the RAS in Saint-Petersburg. Scientists returned to archeological researches of the ancient sacred place Ust-Poluy in the 90-s. Next year the archeologists of Yamal plan to put the monument into long-term storage, as the press-service of the governor of Yamal informs.
As we should note, researches of the archeological epoch of the Middle Age near the settlement Zelyoniy Yar (Priuralskiy district) will be continued in this field season in Yamal. In parallel with the excavations specialists of Tomsk State University will continue work on defining of borders of the monument, precise location of ancient objects and constructions in the cultural layer. The work with be conducted with help of the method of geo-magnetic survey. Analogous researches are planned on the monument of the Eneolithic Period Gorniy Samotnel-1 in Priuralskiy district.
