One hundred Russian and foreign scientists will participate in the expedition «Yamal-Arctic 2014»

This summer about 100 scientists from Russia and other countries will arrive to Yamal to participate in the expedition «Yamal-Arctic 2014».
This information was given by the director of the department of science and innovations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Andrey Denisyuk on the press-conference.
Distinguishing from the expedition of the previous two years, which were conducted on board of the ship «Professor Molchanov», this one will take place on land. The specialists will study the central and the southern parts of the region. According to the words of Andrey Denisyuk, more than 30 applications for participation in the expedition were received. 15 of them were chosen. This year the format of conducting of the expedition was changed a little because of restriction of financial resources. Only collectives of scientists, who are ready to work on conditions of co-financing, were invited. «From our side we provide only transport and logistic accompanying on the territory of the region», as the director of the department of science and innovations added.
During this summer the scientists are planning to study birds and animals in different districts of Yamal, state of rivers and lakes and also permafrost. Also employees of the Institute of the Earth Cryosphere at the Siberian branch of the RAS will study state of permafrost phenomena near the new railroad line Obskaya – Bovanenkovo, to the north from Khanto Lake and also around the towns Noviy Urengoy and Nadym. The group of scientists from Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences will study state of population of geese and barnacle geese on the territory of the Yuribey River. The group of specialists of the biological faculty of Moscow State University will conduct field work on Beliy Island and will elaborate recommendations on monitoring of ornithological fauna, the polar bear, population of the reindeer, the arctic fox and other animals. The big station of the scientific center for exploration of the Arctic will be organized in the settlement Gyda – there the scientists from Yamal will continue collecting information about health of native population. Field work on study of tundra ecological systems will take place on Yerkuta.
According to the information given by the director of the interregional expedition center «Arktika» (Arctic) Konstantin Oshchepkov, this year big attention will be paid to study of vegetation cover of the peninsula. For example, the specialists from Saint-Petersburg will analyze state of pastures, where reindeer overgrazing is observed. The research is very important. It needs to understand, what kind of consequences there will be in 2,5,10 years, as he notes. The expedition will be finished completely in October.
