The command «North» will be formed in Russia to protect the Arctic

The new arctic military command «North» will be formed in Russia till 2017. It will consist of two arctic brigades. This information was given by Commander-in-Chief of the Land Force, Colonel-General Oleg Salyukov. Interspecific grouping of troops (forces) is being formed for protection of national interests in the Arctic.
Now forming of a separate motorized infantry (Arctic) brigade in Murmansk Oblast is being completed. The second arctic brigade will be formed during 2016 in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, as Oleg Salyukov says.
As he explains, these units will solve tasks of patrolling of the coastline zone, protecting of objects and territories along coasts of northern seas and the Arctic Ocean, providing of approach and piloting of ships along the North Sea Route and also demonstrating of military presence in the Arctic.
Armament and special equipment will assist the personnel successfully to fulfill tasks in northern latitudes. Military training will be organized with consideration of climate conditions. The arctic units will be provided with off-road vehicles — two-section transporters, snowmobiles, hovercrafts, as Oleg Salyukov notes.
As RIA «Novosti» informs, Russia intends to strengthen its positions in the Arctic on all fronts: military-political and financial-economic. The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in April entrusted to create there the unified system of basing of surface ships and submarines of new generation, to strengthen the frontier and also to create a new state body for fulfillment of Russian policy in the Arctic.
