Next August the arctic expedition of Yamal will go to the coasts of the Kara Sea in order to continue search work on study of lost ships. This information was given by the head of the project «Kara Sea Expeditions» Sergey Shulinin to journalists in Salekhard.
It will be dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory. The expedition will go to the places of wreck (in the years of the Great Patriotic War) of the ships «Marina Raskova» and «Alexander Sibiryakov». The scientists should conduct identification of the Soviet ships and also to define possible reasons of their wreck. According to the words of Sergey Shulinin, when German soldiers attacked the icebreaker «Sibiryakov» by fire, those people, who were able to sit into a boat, were taken captive. Nothing is known about their destiny. Pavel Vavilov was the only survivor. He reached a nameless island by boat, where he was found by Soviet pilots. Exactly from his words it became known, what had happened to «Sibiryakov». The fate of the ship «Marina Raskova» was also unhappy. This former American ship was launched on water in 1919. In summer of 1944 torpedoes were launched in to «Marina Raskova», the ship got a hole and sank. According to the preliminary data, 374 of 758 people being on the ship were lost.
As the head of the project notes, memorial tablets with lists of names of the crew members will be set on hulls of the ships after their finding and identifying. The place of their wreck will be marked on all marine maps.
As we should remind, in autumn Sergey Shulinin participated in the marine search expedition under the leadership of the Russian Geographical Society. During work on waters of the Kara Sea the Russian researchers found the lost ships «Marina Raskova» and «Alexander Sibiryakov» and set their precise coordinates.
