Artur Chilingarov represented Russia on the international assembly in Iceland

The second international Arctic Circle assembly was finished in the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. More than 1500 delegates from 37 countries, including Russia, participated in it.
Protection of unique nature of the North became the basic theme of the forum. Spokespeople told about climate changes, melting of arctic ices and activation of navigation on the Northern Sea Route.
Prime Minister of Iceland Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson notes that potential of the Arctic includes oil, gas, fish and minerals. Also, alternative transport communication, which will allow Europe, North America and Asia becoming closer. He expresses the opinion that cooperation with other regions is the key to policy in the Arctic.
As the informational and analytical agency EastRussia (Vostok Rossii) informs, the special presidential envoy on cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic Artur Chilingarov presented the position of the country within the forum. As he notes, Russia as the largest arctic power, a considerable part of which is situated in the Far North, was and stays a supporter of constructive dialogue on all issues included into the arctic agenda. He expresses firm belief that in the Arctic there are no problems that could not be solved on the basis of good neighborly relations and constructive dialogue. Artur Chilingarov also enumerated basic tasks of Russia in the arctic zone: protection of national sovereignty in the Arctic, economic development of the north in combination with careful attitude to environment and interests of indigenous peoples, state support of northern regions, multidimensional cooperation with other arctic states. He presented an example of such cooperation: drilling of the northernmost well of Russia Universitetskaya-1 by «Rosneft», in the result of which the field Pobeda was discovered. 8 foreign companies, including the American ExxonMobil, participated in the project. As he notes, unfortunately, cooperation was interrupted. He is sure that all the sides suffered from stopping of such strategically important long-term project. The Russian side strives to keep relations with all its foreign partners in order they would have the opportunity to come back to the project, when political relations are normalized, as he declares.
