The group of scientists came back from the expedition to the funnel, which is situated in the district of Bovanenkovo. This time the specialists managed to descend to the bottom of the funnel. This information was given to journalists in the press center of the news agency IA «Sever-Press» by the director of the Russian center for exploration of the Arctic Vladimir Pushkaryov.
8 people participated in the expedition: scientific employees of the Institute of the Earth Cryosphere at the Siberian branch of the RAS, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Institute of Oil and Gas Problems of the Siberian Branch of the RAS, Gazprom VNIIGAZ, a specialist of the company «Timer» from Moscow and a rescuer of the detachment «Yamalspas» from Noyabrsk.
As Vladimir Pushkaryov explains, in summer, during two previous expeditions, the specialists did not succeed to collect necessary samples inside the funnel because of constant destructions. Now everything became frozen, and they were able to fulfill the complete descend. It made 16 meters of a vertical wall. But they had to descend and ascend several times. Also he notes that only one day was given for the expedition. Thus, they had to work in the darkness. For this case the researchers took a portable electric power unit and flashlights.
The scientists researched walls of the funnel, took samples of rock, ice and gas. Further work will be continued in laboratories of scientific institutes. Probably, as the specialists say, foreign laboratories also will be attracted for analysis of the received results – in Holland and Germany. This is only the beginning of detailed study. The basis was laid. Further the specialists will process the collected materials, will plan directions of further work. It needs to attract the complex of methods and drilling, as it is noted by an employee of the department of cryolithology and glaciology of Lomonosov Moscow State University Alexander Kizyakov.
As Vladimir Pushkaryov notes, the external view of the funnel has changed since the moment of the expedition in August. The funnel is being filled with water gradually. In August the depth of water made 5 meters, now it makes 10.5 meters. Besides, it is being filled with snow. Thus, in the opinion of the scientists, there are serious grounds to think that already in spring the funnel will turn into a lake.
