The regional ecological center of the Northern Fleet on monitoring of state of environment in the Russian Arctic will start working next year.
This information was given by the Commander of the Northern Fleet, Admiral Vladimir Korolev on the extended sitting of the Military council of the Northern Fleet.
Ecological monitoring and control over observation of Russian and international nature-protecting legislation in places of location of the fleet and in the arctic zone will become the basic task of the ecological center, as RIA «Novosti» informs.
The commander also notes that, beside observation of ecological demands and standards, «systemic work on improvement of ecological situation in places of location and on adjoining territories» is one of tasks of the Northern Fleet. Therefore, next year it is planned to continue work on elimination of wastes from Kotelny Island, the archipelagoes Franz-Joseph Land and Novaya Zemlya. In addition to removal of metal scraps, it is planned to pull down ramshackle constructions, to remove debris that remained from the Soviet time and also to conduct activities on reclamation of territories.
