The director of the Center on the Economy of the North and the Arctic and the director of the Council for the Study of Productive Forces, the Chairman of the Russian section of the European Regional Science Association and the Chairman of the socioeconomic section of the Expert Council on the Arctic and Antarctic under the Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Alexander Pilyasov asked questions about development of the arctic territory of the country, scientific researches in the Arctic zone to the governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Dmitriy Kobylkin after his report within the panel discussion of the Gaidar Forum.
As the governor notes in his answer, during long years the Arctic will be a driver of Russian economy. He considers that if the region is destined to raise its science then the Arctic is the next outer space for Russia. It is formed so for Yamal that exactly this region was included to the arctic zone by means of such driver – its fuel and energy complex. It means that the region is competitive today. It is basis for economy of Russia. The region does not stop in its work; it goes further to the shelf. Every step in the Arctic today is innovative. The region develops science owing to the Arctic, and the main thing is so that the subject does not invent any special steps. It moves behind business. Business goes, the region helps. It is clear that the region must not let things slide. The region should actively cooperate with its oil and gas complex, should control it in some issues, for example, ones connected with ecology. «Because the Arctic is our home», as the governor of Yamal answers.
