Russian scientists set the age of the remains of the ancient musk ox found in Yamal two years ago. According to evaluation of the specialists, the finding is 2900 years old, as TASS informs.
As the head of the laboratory of paleo-ecology of the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology at the Ural branch of the RAS Pavel Kosintsev says, they proved that the musk ox of Yamal lived longer than its relatives from other regions on several hundreds years. As he notes, the remains were found in a cave in an archeological layer together with bones of other ancient animals and were preserved well. Till this time bones of musk oxen were found only on the surface. It was impossible to reconstruct climate on their basis because of aggressive influence of environment.
As we should note, ancestors of modern musk oxen lived in the end of the Miocene in highlands of Central Asia. About 3 million and 500 thousand years ago, when climate became colder, they went down from the Himalayas and settled around the territory of Siberia and the other parts of northern Eurasia. Abrupt decrease in population of musk oxen was connected with warming of climate. Now more than 120 musk oxen live in the region.
