As we should remind, the events that took place in summer of 1944 became the most tragic page of internal convoys in history of the Great Patriotic War in the Arctic. In 60 miles from Beliy Island the ship «Marina Raskova» was attacked by a German submarine, the ship got a hole and sank. 378 soviet military men and workers of the home front being on the ship were lost. There were more than 700 people on board of the ship.
During the work in waters of the Kara Sea the Russian researchers found the lost ships «Marina Raskova» and «Alexander Sibiryakov» and set their precise coordinates. The memorial complex and the memorial bell-tower «The Bells of the Memory» were set on Beliy Island in the memory of the tragedy. Memorial plates in memory of those people, who had died, were set in Salekhard and Voronezh.
