The visiting intersessional conference of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues was finished in Salekhard. In the last point of the program of the stay – a nomadic camp of reindeer herders not far from the town the chairperson of the forum Dalee Dorough gave her comments to journalists on the results of the conference.
According to her information, on this day the participants of the forum worked effectively. A considerable part of the session was directed to discussion of format of intersessional sittings and clarifying of formulations. According to the words of Dalee Dorough, each participant made his or her contribution, and further it can improve work of the forum. She marks positive tendencies – indigenous population has opportunities to receive education, access to services of health protection. But it is also important to see, how rights of aboriginal peoples are observed and protected. The chairperson of the forum reminded about existence of two documents of the United Nations Organization – the universal declaration of human rights and the declaration on rights of indigenous peoples, they should not contradict each other. As she notes, it is important to ensure that rights and interests of indigenous population are protected not less.
Also she with regret stated the fact that not all necessary documents within the work of the forum were translated to all official languages of the United Nations Organization, including Russian. Russian-speaking representatives of the United Nations Organization did not have qualitative translation of documents. Dalee Dorough promised to tell about this fact to the secretary general of the United Nations Organization in order not to face such problems in the future. Also she expresses hope that the government of the Russian Federation will assist in solving of the issue of linguistic investments in order documents are translated in a proper way and are presented in advance.
