New kinds of power plants for ships, which will go on the Northern Sea Route, are among directions on search for technologies for development of the Arctic.
Scientists from the Institute of Thermal Physics of the RAS suggested using aluminum as fuel for icebreakers. It will be burnt in reactors with supercritical water.
Big released power and necessary amount of fuel that three times smaller than of hydrocarbons are positive sides of aluminum. Besides, aluminum is an ecologically friendly source of energy. Products of its burning are pure water and its steams. But as for negative sides, aluminum is four times more expensive than oil. Electric power makes a bigger part of the cost, and scientists propose to reduce exactly the cost of its production.
Small hydro-electric power stations on Siberian rivers can become a source of cheap energy. It is possible to create refueling stations with the new kind of fuel on their base, as oilru.com presents the words of doctor of physic-mathematical sciences Anatoly Vostrikov.
