The dictionary of personal names of Nenets people of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug was presented in Salekhard. The author of the edition Yelizaveta Yaptik called her presentation «The book about big love». According to her words, the dictionary is a result of 4 years of work and confession in love to her people and to favorite work.
As she tells, she works in a branch of the civil registry office of Yamalskiy district. When computerization appeared in the district, it became known that there were some variances in names and surnames of many Nenets people. It was not possible to find the truth; there were not any documents, on which it one managed to be based in order to check up authenticity of a name. Thus, the idea to write such book appeared, in order it would contain all names and surnames represented in Yamal. Yelizaveta Yaptik thinks that she coped with this work.
During four years she visited archives of Priuralskiy, Yamalskiy, Tazovskiy and Nadym districts. She met with tundra people, who kept knowledge about their ancestors during long centuries, with old residents and scientists from Saint Petersburg. She tells that her relatives and friends supported her and assisted in her work. The dictionary containing 7000 names is the result of this hard work. The book is published in 250 copies, as Yelizaveta Yaptik says. She published her book at her own expenses. A researcher from the European University of Saint Petersburg, candidate of pedagogical sciences Yelena Lyarskaya was very impressed with this work. In her opinion, creation of the dictionary of Nenets names is scientific breakthrough. This is the most complete collection of names of Nenets people. There were no dictionaries of such scale and quality. Such books are necessary from different sides: from juridical, scientific and practical points of views.
Colleagues highly appreciated the work by Yelizaveta Yaptik. They note that now they have an opportunity to see correct spelling of a name, a patronymic in the dictionary, thus excluding mistakes.
The author of the dictionary told about a case that happened in Priuralskiy district. Children of one and the same family had different spelling of the surname in their birth certificates – Toholya and Togolya, as not relatives by law. There are many such examples. Some patronymics have different endings; some names begin not typically for Nenets language. She expresses hope that the dictionary will help preserving real names and surnames of Nenets people.
