Expert assessment of 5 unique icons found last October inside walls of an ancient manor in the town Salekhard was conducted in Yamal. According to the information given to a correspondent of IA «Sever-Press» by a candidate of art history from the town Tobolsk Marina Safronova, the icons were painted in the end of the 19th century, in 1894.
They had been created by icon-painters in Yekaterinburg, not by craftspeople of Ishim, as it was supposed earlier. Agafangel, bishop of Tobolsk and Siberia brought these icons to Yamal. They were purposed for the temple of Peter and Paul in the town Obdorsk (the former name of Salekhard).
The state of preservation of the icons was evaluated as satisfactory. As it is noted in the documents found by art historians, the faces of Mother of God, Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Lord Almighty cost 11 thousand rubles – a considerable sum of money in the 19th century. Gold leaf of the highest standard was used at creation of the icons.
The finding can be considered almost unique, as after the revolution, closing of churches and confiscation of property many icons painted in the 19th century were not preserved. In spite of some considerable damage, the icons can be restored.
