Today navigation from Europe to Asia and back along arctic routes is economically profitable.
But neither the Northern Sea Route nor development of hydrocarbon extraction have any prospects without icebreaker support. It was declared by the director general of «Atomflot» Vyacheslav Ruksha.
Rosatomflot provides icebreaker operations towards and on water areas of the port of Sabetta within the season from November to June. Thus, 34 operations on icebreaker support were conducted from December of 2013 to November of 2014. The amount of transported cargoes made 1 million and 100 thousand tons.
By 2021 the amount of export of liquefied natural gas and condensate from the port of Sabetta will make 17 million and 600 thousand tons. During one year it needs to provide icebreaker support of 225 ship calls to the port being fulfilled by gas carriers with the mass 90 thousand tons. They will go out from Sabetta each 40 hours. According to the preliminary calculations, this project will give up to 40 percent of the total load of icebreakers of the enterprise.
The icebreaker fleet is the basis providing exploration and development of the Arctic. Icebreakers of the project are able to provide year-round operations on icebreaker support of tankers around all water areas of the Northern Sea Route, as IA «Regnum» informs.
According to expert assessments, more than 70 percent of oil and more than 80 percent of gas reserves of all Russian water areas are situated in subsoil of the Russian Arctic zone. Shelves of the East Siberian Sea, the Chukchi Sea and the Laptev Sea are referred to promising districts of production. In the future the arctic shelf can become the basic source of oil and gas for Russia and the world market.
