A Russian hydrographic ship will specify borders of the continental shelf of the Arctic

The Hydrographic Survey Vessel of the Northern fleet «Vizir» will specify borders of the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf of Russia in the Arctic. This information was given by the chief of the press-service of the fleet, Captain Vadim Serga.
As he underlines, the important state task is set before the hydrographical expedition – to specify coordinates of locations that define geographical position of baselines for measuring the width of the territorial sea, the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf of the Russian Federation in the Arctic Ocean.
The ship will conduct the complex of oceanographic researches in the district of the islands Vize, Ushakov, Schmidt and the archipelago Novaya Zemlya, as TASS informs. The expedition of such level is being conducted for the first time in history of the Russian Navy, as he notes.
The sailors will study the bottom relief in districts of the Arctic remote from basic locations of the Northern Fleet. Besides, the expedition will be busy with collecting of important data for correcting of navigation marine maps, guidebooks and manuals for navigation.
Specifying of state of infrastructure on the arctic islands is also an important task, as Vadim Serga notes. It is supposed that the ship «Vizir» will complete the work till the middle of October.
