Siberian geologists will be able to define state of permafrost for forecasting of climate

Employees of the Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPGG SB RAS) elaborated the set of methods of operative defining of state of permafrost and assessment of human influence on it.
It will allow better forecasting climate changes on the Earth. According to the words of the chief of field party of IPGG SB RAS Aleksey Fage, the used method of frequency electric sounding is based on the technology of vertical electric sounding that was invented more than 100 years ago by the famous French scientists and businessmen brothers Schlumberger. They used an installation of 4 electrodes to research different rocks. Modern computing technologies allowed increasing the number of electrodes up to 48 and automating the process of their use.
As TASS informs, such method is distinguished with high operational efficiency. It is possible to receive the first data already during several hours. With its help the geologists researched a sector of ground with the area about 300 square meters. According to the received data, permafrost melts faster near diesel generators – if last year the depth of the melting zone made about 30-40 centimeters, this year it makes already about 80-90 centimeters.
As Aleksey Fage explains, melting of permafrost is accompanied with emission of big amount of greenhouse gas. Correspondingly, if it is possible better to predict melting zones, it will be possible to make more precise models of climate changes on the planet, as he says.
Besides, the set of methods will allow analyzing state of permafrost rocks there, where people conduct some activity, and using them more carefully. Even little influence on permafrost can lead to big consequences. For example, there, where a caterpillar off-road vehicle passed, a lake can appear in 100-150 years.
