In several years Beliy Island will become a scientific reserve for studying birds and animals. It was announced by the director of the department of international and external economic relations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Alexander Mazharov to journalists.
He notes that a research platform for scientists from different institutes and universities will be created on the island. They can come with their own programs and conduct scientific work.
This summer scientists from all over Russia worked on the island and collected valuable research materials, which are being researched now. According to the words of Alexander Mazharov, history of Beliy Island will not end on this; it still has white spots that scientists have to solve.
The head of the department assures that, in spite of the economic situation in the country, next year the ecological expedition to Beliy Island will be continued. Volunteers have big work to fulfill: by barges to remove the whole garbage collected during three years — more than 500 tons of scrap metal. The team is working on the Island till the twenty-third of December. Its participants are collecting all the old equipment and casks in a certain place. Beliy Island is valuable not only for Yamal but for the whole Arctic region, as he says.
