Finnish deer herders educated students from Yamal how to work

Students of Yamal polar agro-economic technical school came back from Finland. During a week in the education center of Sami region in the town Inari they studied the self-control system of a reindeer slaughterhouse and a shop of boning deer meat corresponding to the EU directives.

The representatives of Yamal met with the rector of the centre, Liisa Holmberg, visited classrooms and a workshop on manufacturing of wooden tableware and items of bone and antler, a workshop for sewing fur shoes, leather processing and weaving workshops. Within lectures the head of the production complex Leo Jutila told them about inculcation of a new project on self-control over products quality that is counted for 2016-2018. The students of Yamal spoke to teachers, reindeer herders of the complex, discussed peculiarities of reindeer husbandry on the Yamal Peninsula and in Finland, methods of detection and medical treatment of diseases of the reindeer.
During the practical course the students of agro-economic technical school participated in the full cycle of slaughter of deer: fulfilled deer slaughter, evisceration and veterinary inspection of carcasses, deboning, desinewing and packing of meat, cleaning of rooms after all procedures. The representatives of Yamal also worked in a corral, where they participated in driving deer into the corral, sorting, tagging and veterinary treatment of animals. On each stage of education they paid great attention to issues of control over work quality and conformity to entire required documentation. Strict following of rules of hygiene and safety at a deer slaughter were marked.
The course was completed with participation in a master class on work with reindeer antler and bone under the guidance of a teacher of the center. The representatives of Yamal made knives and rings for an arkan (a rope-lasso) for the memory about the trip, as the department of international and external economic relations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug informs.
As we should note, the education center of the Sami region is a partner of educational institutions of Yamal within the framework of cooperation with the University of the Arctic. Since 2011 several working meetings took place in Finland and Yamal, where directions for sharing experience and developing joint activities were defined. Organizing of secondary special vocational education in reindeer herding and fishing specializations, tourism and management in the field of applied arts is one of such directions. The past working trip is the first experience for the students of Yamal on passing through the practical course of education.
