In spring of 2016 the participants of the Russian-German project «PLOT — Paleolimnological Transect» will conduct scientific and research work on Lake Bolshoye Shchuchye situated on the territory of the Polar-Ural natural park in Yamal.
The scientists from Saint Petersburg and Germany will conduct seismic-acoustic survey of the water reservoir and will take samples of bottom sediments. By the results of the analysis they will reconstruct changes in climate and environment in the district of the lake. Organizational activities for support of the project have been already started in Yamal. This information was given by the director of the department on science and innovations of Yamal Aleksey Titovskiy on the press-conference.
As he explains, these researches have both fundamental and applied significance. They will allow better explaining regional reaction of climate onto global changes and climate mechanisms of feedback and also forecasting of climate changes and consequences for environment in the future. Analogous changes are planned on Lake Ladoga, water reservoirs of the Taymyr peninsula and Yakutia.
Financial support of the project is rendered by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The Russian center for exploration of the Arctic will be busy with transportation of the expedition group and equipment to Lake Bolshoye Shchuchye.
