The nuclear-powered icebreaker «Vaygach» fulfilled the latest passage in this season on water areas of the Northern Sea Route.
The ship passed from Cape Dezhnev, the most extreme points of the Chukotka peninsula, to Beliy Island in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
The nuclear-powered icebreaker «Vaygach» fulfilled the latest passage in this season on water areas of the Northern Sea Route, having set the record of speed. The icebreaker overcame the distance in 2250 miles during 7.5 days or 185 hours. The average speed made more than 12 knots, as Rosatomflot presents the words of the captain of the ship Leonid Irlitsa.
According to the data of Rosatomflot, «Vaygach» started icebreaking support of ships in the Kara Sea to the port Sabetta. Soon the nuclear-powered icebreaker «Yamal» will join the nuclear-powered icebreakers working in the Arctic. It will go to the Kara Sea and also will conduct icebreaking support of ships towards the port of Sabetta, as it is informed on the portal nao24.ru.
The icebreaker «Vaygach» is a shallow-draught nuclear-powered icebreaker of the project «Taymyr». Its distinguishing feature is in reduced draught that allows servicing ships going on the Northern Sea Route with stops in mouths of Siberian rivers.
