This week the scientists from Yamal will participate in the international conference in Quebec, Canada.
Initiation of the full-scale circumpolar project on researching of arctic terrestrial ecological systems will take place there. This information was given by the leading researcher of the center for study of the Arctic Alexander Sokolov on the press-conference in the news agency «Sever-Press».
As he tells, the scientists of Yamal cover three groups of organisms of terrestrial ecological systems: plants, mammals and birds. They study phenomena connected with climate changes and industrial development of the territory. According to the words of Alexander Sokolov, first of all, attention is paid not to oil spills, but to increase in number of people in tundra: for example, 200 people lived in Sabetta earlier; now 10 thousand people live there. The agenda of the whole circumpolar society includes appearing of new southern kinds of ecological systems coming into the Arctic and suppressing of aboriginal species.
As the scientist notes, it is very important. This year became the most shocking in history of study of ecological systems of Yamal. The fox appeared in Yerkuta, new sandpipers were seen in Sabetta, the number of voles did not decrease there. The black kite was seen on Beliy Island. Its nest is situated in the middle of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. There are some other similar observations.
Alexander Sokolov called the previous year «breakthrough» for Yamal researchers of ecological systems. They received grant financing of the regional government. The task was set – to use geographical advantages of the region. The scientists came to an idea to organize monitoring in different natural sub-zones of the Yamal peninsula: southern, typical and arctic tundra. As he explains, at scrutinizing of the circumpolar arctic map of the whole world it is impossible to find correct gradation of natural zones of the same width without such natural geographical barriers as rivers and large mountain ridges. But for study of the notorious climate change Yamal can be very comfortable platform. Here «players», on which these changes influence, will differ from each other in shrub, typical and arctic tundra.
According to the words of the leading researcher, in 2015 the scientists of Yamal managed to create worthy field materials in stationary centers situated near the station Obskaya, the Yerkuta River, the sea port of Sabetta being built now and also in Beliy Island. Last year Alexander Sokolov counted 465 man-days spent by the specialists in the field. This year, by the preliminary assessments, the number of man-days in stationary centers will make 550.
