The participants of the motorcar expedition “Attraction of the Arctic – Yamal Ring” reached Beliy Island. They started the expedition from Moscow on the 21st of February and went on the route of Dvinsko-Obskiy group of the Great Northern Expedition that had taken place under the leadership of the Russian explorer Stepan Malygin.
In the 18th century the famous traveler was the first to circumnavigate the Yamal peninsula. The strait between the peninsula and Beliy Island was named after him. From the town Berezov, where in 1737 the expedition of Malygin had completed its travel, the motorcars went down by the Ob River to the town Salekhard. Along the eastern coast of Yamal they reached Malygin Strait, and later on drifting ice went to Beliy Island, as IA “Arktika-Info” informs. The travelers informed about the fine weather on that day: from 14 to 18C degrees below zero, small wind, sunny and clear. They told about difficulties on their way. They also informed about many fresh tracks of polar bear but they did not see any bears.
Now the extreme travelers are planning to cross the polar tundra and to reach the Marine hydro-meteorological station of Popov. On their way back the motorcars will go along the western coast of the Yamal peninsula and the row of islands Sharapovy Koshki — the place of wintering of Malygin’s expedition in 1736. In the result the travelers will overcome more than 8 thousand kilometers on frozen rivers, lakes, sea ice and tundra of Yamal.
As we should remind, the participants of the motorcar project “Attraction of the Arctic” gradually study routes and history of groups of the Great Northern Expedition. By standard motorcars they search for accesses to the coast of northern seas.
