An ethnologist from Yamal told about “white spots” in history of the Ob North

The head of the sector of ethnology at the scientific center for study of the Arctic Galina Kharyuchi participated in the conference of the Russian Historical Society of Ural Federal Okrug under the chairpersonship of the head of the society, the speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Sergey Naryshkin.
The event took place in Tyumen State Oil and Gas University and gathered leading Ural historians, museum employees and ethnographers. They discussed the concept of development of domestic historical education and new schoolbooks for schoolchildren. The participants from regions presented important scientific projects. This information was given to a correspondent of IA “Sever-Press” in the scientific center for study of the Arctic.
Galina Kharyuchi told about a role of science in saving of historical and cultural legacy of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North. Priorities of activity of this scientific establishment are the following: research of ethno-genesis, ethnic history, economy, material, social and spiritual culture of indigenous people and old residents of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, modern ethnic processes. The scientists are creating the dialectological atlas of Ural languages spread on the territory of the region and the folkloristic archive of peoples of Yamal. Also the ethnologists of the center pay much attention to social and cultural issues, modern situation of inhabitants of the Arctic and also inclusion of their knowledge into modern science, education and programs on saving of cultural legacy.
Study of religious outlooks and monitoring of social and inter-ethnic processes assist bodies of the state power and local self-government to avoid negative tendencies in the public society of Yamal.
Galina Kharyuchi notes that in history of the Ob North and Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug there are still many “white spots”, including ones that touch upon the period of formation of the soviet power in the region, upon provoked Nenets actions, repressions of shamans and rich reindeer herders. In the opinion of the ethnologist, ones and the same events in the country’s history can arouse contradictory assessments, but they touch upon every family and every person.
