The department on science and innovations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug together with the interregional expedition center “Arktika” (Arctic) conducted the round table dedicated to fulfillment of the scientific and research project on shelter for the polar bear in the Russian Arctic.
The strategy of protection of the strongest beast of prey in high latitudes, the symbol of the Arctic, will be elaborated by the results of this project.
As the director of the department on science and innovations of Yamal Aleksey Titovskiy notes, scientists know how many beasts of prey live on Spitsbergen and on Wrangel Island, but practically there is no data about their number and state in the Kara Sea and the Barents Sea.
At that, meetings of people with these animals from the Red Book happen more often, in particular, because of climate warming. Polar bears started appearing in Sabetta, in the district of Kharasavey and on the northern coast of the Gydan peninsula. Last November three bears came very close to a nomadic camp of reindeer herders in Baydaratskaya tundra. On development of polar extractive fields and development of arctic tourism it is impossible to avoid new meetings with the beast of prey. Actual information about the number of polar bears living in the region and about their routes can help to prevent from such situations.
The World Wildlife Fund supported the idea of registration and monitoring of polar bears in Yamal. As we should remind, 5 satellite collars giving information about movement of the beasts of prey were purchased for a grant of the center “Arktika” last year. Pilot researches on Beliy Island were conducted. The response team was created. It is supposed that “the bear patrol” in Yamal will help in rescue and protection measures, fulfillment of scientific and research work, presentation of knowledge to specialists locally. The team includes representatives of the Russian center for exploration of the Arctic, the tourist company “Arktika Tour”, the ecological organization “Green Arctic” and the department of natural-resource regulation, forestry relations and development of oil and gas complex of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. All the participants passed through education in the scientific center at Severtsov Institute of Problems of Ecology and Evolution, received certificates confirming their qualification necessary for work with beasts of prey. Now variants of cooperation with enterprises of oil and gas complex interested in inculcation of the project and with other partners are being discussed.
The director of the interregional expedition center “Arktika” Andrey Baryshnikov demonstrated a collar and materials for immobilization of polar bears.
The scientists of Yamal, representatives of specialized department and Rosprirodnadzor (the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Usage) expressed their suggestions on the future project. They defined possible mechanisms of interaction with the department of natural-resource regulation, forestry relations and development of oil and gas complex and Rosprirodnadzor for fulfillment of the project. Also they spoke about protection of data about movement of polar bears from poachers. The employees of the center “Arktika” were recommended to study experience of work of “bear patrols” in Chukotka and Nenets Autonomous Okrug and to use in Yamal, when it is necessary, as the press-service of the governor of Yamal informs.
