Scientists of Yamal are preparing for the new field season. The regional scientific center for study of the Arctic will fulfill the large amount of work. The nearest expedition will take place in April — in waters of the Gulf of Ob.
Ecologists of the scientific center and their colleagues from Barnaul Institute for water and environmental problems, the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences will study hydro-chemical parameters of the water reservoir and food base of ichthyofauna. The scientists of Yamal and Barnaul strengthened their cooperation with establishing of the joint laboratory for water and environmental problems in the Arctic. They intend to study aquatic ecosystems, degradation of Arctic landscapes, to work on the Gydan peninsula, Maloye and Bolshoye Shchuchye lakes. This information was given to a correspondent of IA “Sever-Press” in the scientific centre for study of the Arctic.
Last year in August the expedition of the institute and the center for study of the Arctic was on the relic, similar to Baikal, lake of tectonic origin, Bolshoye Shchuchye Lake. Even the first reconnaissance study proved to be effective. The scientists determined the maximum depth — 163 meters and hydro-chemical characteristics of the lake, due to which Bolshoye Shchuchye Lake can claim for the title of the deepest and the purest in Ural region. In addition, they found composition of benthic fauna unique for the Arctic region.
Another expedition will take place in April with the Institute of Earth’s cryosphere, the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The scientists intend to drill permafrost and to extract cores. Their study will allow tracing how climate change influence on a seasonal-thawing layer.
This year first expeditions of the multi-year project of biologists of Yamal to study state of terrestrial ecosystems of Yamal tundra, starting from rodents and ending with predators, will be sent in spring. This project has global geography of partners. In different years it was attended by scientists from Russian universities and the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as from Norway, France, Finland, Denmark, the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Czech Republic, Poland and other countries. Results of the researches are published in international scientific editions.
