The sitting of the Arctic Economic Council took place in Saint Petersburg.
Representatives of business community of Russia, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Canada and the USA and also some associations of indigenous peoples of the Arctic, including the Russian Association of indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East participated in it. The event became the first meeting on the territory of Russia in history of the Arctic Economic Council, as the press-service of the forum “The Arctic – Territory of Dialogue” informs.
The participants touched upon topical issues of the Arctic agenda, including creation of unified international standards regulating business activity in the Arctic, issues of public-private partnership, development of arctic infrastructure in the sphere of sea transport and telecommunication.
Tara Sweeney, the Chair of the Arctic Economic Council and the Executive Vice President for Arctic Slope Regional Corporation says that she is grateful to Russia for its contribution to the work of the Arctic Economic Council, to discussions about how to make the Arctic a comfortable place for doing business. As she notes, the sides discussed the results of activities of various working groups of the Arctic Economic Council, including the group on sea transport and infrastructure – this theme is very important for Russia. In addition, they discussed issues of telecommunications and creation of broadband communication channels in the Arctic, the given working group prepared a report on forming of necessary infrastructure. Also constructive discussion on standards of attracting of investments to the Arctic took place. They came to the decision thoroughly to analyze these standards and to determine how they can be combined with topics essential for the Arctic Economic Council, as Tara Sweeney says.
According to the words of the deputy chairman of the Arctic Economic Council, the first deputy director general of “Sovcomflot” Yevgeniy Ambrosov, the meeting was organized in advance of the forum “The Arctic — Territory of Dialogue”, which will take place in March in Arkhangelsk. “For us it is very important to show our colleagues and partners from the Arctic Economic Council, what role Russia gives to development of arctic projects”. Russia, and Sovcomflot in particular, have serious competences in fulfillment of major industrial projects in the Arctic, they accumulated large database on criteria of safe operation of the fleet in difficult conditions of high latitudes, as Yevgeniy Ambrosov says. He adds that ones of the key aims of the Sovcomflot are: inculcation of the highest technologies and standards of safety of navigation, prevention from use of sub-standard fleet in arctic waters in the future, prevention from emergency incidents, particularly those related to damage for sensitive ecology of the Arctic.
The Arctic Economic Council was established in 2014 under the aegis of the intergovernmental Arctic Council. It unites representatives of business community of the Arctic States. The objectives of the body include: assisting to responsible economic development in the Arctic, doing business in the region, establishing of trade relations and attracting of investments.
