The Northern Fleet will receive “Ilya Muromets” for icebreaking support of ships in the Arctic

It is planned to pass the newest icebreaker “Ilya Muromets” to the Russian Navy this autumn after completion of all stages of tests. Now the ship is on the stage of completion of building. The work is being fulfilled by the enterprise “Admiralteiskie Verfi” (the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg) in conformity with the schedule.
According to its characteristics, “Ilya Muromets” is able effectively and independently to fulfill icebreaking support of combat ships and vessels in the Arctic zone and also to provide towing.
The lead icebreaker of the project 21180 “Ilya Muromets” became the first icebreaker during 45 years, which is being built in interests of the Russian Navy, as the department of information and mass communication of the Ministry for defense informs. In autumn after conducting of mooring, factory, sea and state tests it will be included to the Northern Fleet, where it will fulfill tasks to provide actions of the arctic group of the Russian Navy.
