Unusual cases of making nests of rare birds were found in Novoportovskoye field of “Gazprom Neft”. The results of monitoring of wildlife state near production objects of the company on the Yamal peninsula confirmed this fact.
The mode of work set in Novoportovskoye field assisted to the process of settling of the gyrfalcon on the territory. Favorable conditions – absence of chasing and disturbing from the side of the man, availability of suitable nests assisted to adaptation of the bird to the new landscape, as the director of the Institute of ecology of plants and animals, the Ural branch of the RAS, professor, corresponding member of the RAS Vladimir Bogdanov says.
The results of monitoring show that the gyrfalcon has made the nest near the extractive field for the second year in a row. At the present time its population makes only 8-10 thousand birds around the whole world. It is brought into the Red Book of the Russian Federation with the status of a species decreasing in number; therefore its nesting in Novoportovskoye field is a unique case.
As the gyrfalcon does not make nests itself, it uses old nests of other birds, more often – the raven’s nests. The scientists set that production activity of the enterprise does not influence on the birds.
Besides, in Novoportovskoye field on a small tundra lake the scientists found a nest of other specially protected species – the red-breasted goose. As a rule, the red-breasted goose makes nests on large river steeps. Besides, neighboring of the peregrine falcon is an important condition at choosing a place. As the press-service of “Gazpromneft-Yamal” informs, peregrine falcons protecting their nests from predators, in parallel protect every bird that makes a nest near them. There are neither peregrine falcons nor large river steeps in Novoportovskoye field, but the red-breasted goose, in the opinion of the scientists, could take the man as a protector.
Analysis of prospects of development of the country’s economy for the coming tens of years show that involvement of fields of the continental part of Yamal, adjoining shelf of the Kara Sea and the Gulf of Ob to development should be scrutinized as a without-alternative variant. Ecological monitoring of Novoportovskoye field is a part of this process. The results of the research speak about favorable conditions formed in the field for birds and animals. This spring the specialists wait for gyrfalcons and red-breasted geese in the field again, as the director general of “Gazpromneft – Yamal” Aleksey Ovechkin says.
