From the point of view of an international component, the transport system of the Arctic is interesting, first of all, as a transit route. This is the opinion of the executive secretary of the scientific and expert council at the state commission on Arctic development, the director of the state oceanographic institute Yuriy Sychev.
As he notes, the process of warming and decreasing in the area of the ice cover in the Arctic is observed during the latest 20 years, therefore, it is possible to say about forthcoming intensification of use of the Northern Sea Route. Earlier, when the territory of Russian seas was under ice during the biggest part of a year, transportations were economically unprofitable. At the present time basic carriers consider the opportunity to use the Northern Sea Route as an alternative to the Suez Canal, as IA “Region 29” informs. Of course, it will be not possible to compete with the Suez Canal is the full amount, but it is possible to cope with several tens million tonnes, thus making transportations cheaper, as Yuriy Sychev considers.
He is sure that big amounts of hydrocarbons will be transported on the Northern Sea Route. The enterprise “Yamal LNG”, which will provide 16 million tonnes, Novoportovskoye field – 8 million tonnes of cargoes – will create the necessary cargo traffic. Besides, it is reasonable to transport fish and everything, for which the term of transportation is a critical parameter.
On the forthcoming international forum “The Arctic – Territory of Dialogue” in Archangelsk the participants will discuss importance of transit transportations in the Russian Arctic. Shipbuilders from different countries will participate in the discussion. The second part of transportation in the Arctic zone is domestic, representing the complex of transporting systems: marine, air and railroad. The railroad component supposes that the new main lines will be input to operation in the coming time – the Northern Latitudinal Railway, Belkomur and others. All this together will create preconditions for development of the Arctic zone of Russia.
