Scientists of Yamal will elaborate the methodology for assessment of winter reindeer pastures

Specialists and scientists of the scientific center for study of the Arctic, of Tyumen State University, the department on science and innovations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug are studying problems of reindeer husbandry, keeping of productivity of pastures, health and social wellbeing of population of Tazovskiy district.
The expedition is unique with so that pedological and botanic researches that include study of state of lichen cover, vascular and shrubby plants, geochemical characteristics of soils in areas of reindeer grazing are fulfilled in winter. The scientists plan to elaborate the methodology for assessment of reindeer pastures in winter, to count their productivity and to forecast risks of overgrazing. This information was given to a correspondent of IA “Sever-Press” in the scientific center for study of the Arctic.
As the deputy director of the scientific center for study of the Arctic, doctor of medical sciences Andrey Lobanov says, the expedition is taking place along the most exploited reindeer-herding routes in Tazovskaya, Nakhodkinskaya, Messoyakha, Antipayuta, Tanamskaya and Gydanskaya tundra areas. Such format opens a new page of year-round field researches in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
Pedological and botanic researches are being conducted by the director of the Institute of Ecology and Natural Resource Management at Tyumen State University, doctor of biological sciences Andrey Soromotin – one of elaborators of “the road map” of complex study of the Gydan peninsula. The scientists of the scientific center for study of the Arctic will fulfill traditional researches of health of nomadic population, will collect samples of soil, lichens, reindeer fur and human biological materials for defining of content of heavy metals, will measure radiation background in places of pasturing of reindeer herds.
