Scientists will overcome 1300 kilometers by snowmobiles for sociological survey of reindeer herders

The head of Yamal sociological laboratory, a junior researcher of the Scientific center for study of the Arctic and the Western Siberian branch of the Institute of sociology of the RAS Valery Kibenko and a junior researcher of the Scientific center for study of the Arctic Sergey Zuyev went to the expedition around inter-settlement territories of Yamalskiy district.
The researchers will overcome more than 1300 kilometers by snowmobiles in order to collect information about socioeconomic factors of life activity and social wellbeing of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North conducting traditional way of life. The route of the expedition is going on tundra areas of Panayevsk, Yar-Salye, Seyakha, Mys Kamenniy and Novy Port. This information was given to a correspondent of IA “Sever-Press” in the scientific center for study of the Arctic.
This is the second trip of the scientists of Yamal to tundra within this project. Pilot researches took place last December. Together with employees of the regional department on affairs of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North and representatives of the Legislative Assembly of Yamal Valery Kibenko and Sergey Zuyev visited trading stations of Priuralskiy and Yamalskiy districts, families of reindeer herders in tundra areas of Panayevsk and Yar-Salye.
By the results of the first expedition they tested and corrected the thematic block of the fact-finding questionnaire and the structure of the interview. They managed to collect materials that allowed outlining problems, which families of tundra people faced. In the opinion of the authors of the research, problems of nomadic population of Yamalskiy district require for attracting of attention of the authorities, public organizations and reindeer herders themselves to their solving. By the results of work the scientists will prepare analytical materials for bodies of the power.
In the expedition the scientists will collect biological materials of tundra inhabitants to conduct ecological, medical and biological researches of population of Yamalskiy district in the scientific center. Besides, the researchers plan to collect the data about rare birds on the Yamal peninsula for Sophia Rosenfeld, a biologist of the Bird Ringing Centre of Russia at A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution. In Yamal she is busy with monitoring of state of arctic species populations. Within the grant of the Russian Foundation of Fundamental Research on the theme “Arctic entrepreneurship” being fulfilled by the center for economy of the North and the Arctic at participation of employees of the scientific center for study of the Arctic the researchers will record interviews and will collect information about entrepreneurship among indigenous ethnic minorities of the North.
Logistic support of the expedition is being rendered by the Interregional expedition center “Arctic”. The researches are being conducted on “the road map” of the complex program on applied scientific works on rational use of reindeer pastures and providing of favorable epizootic situation, the scientific plan of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
