The Reindeer Herder’s Day in Salekhard promises to become the most welcoming in history

600 delegates, guests and representatives invited to the International forum “Indigenous ethnic minorities of the North, Siberia and the Far East” will participate in celebration of the Reindeer Herder’s Day in Salekhard on the 25th of March. The forum will start in the regional capital on the 23rd of March.

Representatives from Russian regions, where indigenous ethnic minorities of the North, Siberia and the Far East of Russia reside, federal bodies of the power, the Arctic Council Indigenous Peoples Secretariat, the Association of World Reindeer Herders, the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry will arrive to Salekhard. Diplomats from Azerbaijan, the USA, Great Britain, France and Czechia and also businesspeople from Iceland and Germany will become the guests on the Polar Circle.
The president of the Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East Grigory Ledkov explains than the authorities of Salekhard and Yamal agreed with representatives of the public organization to conduct the main northern holiday within the international forum of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North. Grigory Ledkov asks inhabitants of Salekhard to accept understandingly the fact that the unprecedented number of the guests will be present on the Reindeer Herder’s Day and to show traditional northern hospitability.
As we should remind, the competitions on national kinds of sport will start in the morning on the 25th of March on the Polyabta River. Reindeer herders will compete in throwing of a tynzyan on a khorey (a rope lasso for catching reindeer on a long pole for driving a reindeer team), triple jump, mas-wrestling, jumps over narty (northern nomadic sledge), northern wrestling. The race of reindeer teams traditionally will become the main event of the holiday.
Also the guests and inhabitants of the capital of Yamal will be able to watch the competitions on snowboarding and snowkiting, to participate in the performance “The legend of the North” and in the flashmob. The program includes contests of national suits of Nenets, Komi-Zyryan, Khanty peoples and children’s national suits.
