On the 24th of March in Salekhard the governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Dmitry Kobylkin, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Administration of Russia Magomedsalam Magomedov, the chief Federal inspector of Yamal Alexander Yamokhin and a deputy governor, the director of the regional department of international and external economic relations Alexander Mazharov laid the flowers to the Eternal Flame in the Victory Park.
The heads of the federal and regional authorities, the guests of the forum of indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation, the representatives of the Association participated in the ceremony of laying the flowers. The participants observed a minute of silence for those, who had never returned from the war.
Every fifth inhabitant of Yamal went to the front. In total 49 thousand people lived in Yamal in 1941, the war called 8982 people. Every fourth of them – 2281 did not come back. About 2000 people died on battlefields, and 172 gone missing, more than 200 died in hospitals from wounds. Eight residents of Yamal were awarded with the highest military award — the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
