The collective monograph “Bird Migration across the Himalayas” was published in the academic edition of Cambridge University Press. Yamal scientists of the institute of ecology of plants and animals, the Ural branch of the RAS and the branch of the institute in Labytnangi Vasiliy Sokolov and Alexander Sokolov are co-authors of one of the chapters on peregrine falcons crossing “the roof of the world”.
The chapter is dedicated to analysis of migration (across the Himalayas) of peregrine falcons, which bring out their nestlings in Eastern Taymyr. Study of migration routes of the birds from the Red Book became possible in the course of fulfillment of the joint British-Russian project on satellite tagging of peregrine falcons in 5 points of the Russian Arctic: on the Kola peninsula, in Yamal, Taymyr, in the Lena River Delta and the Kolyma River Delta.
In the published work the authors in details analyzed spring and autumn migrations of peregrine falcons, crossing of several natural barriers on the way of their flight: the Central Siberian Plateau, the mountains of Southern Siberia and Mongolia, deserts, Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas. 8 of 10 peregrine falcons tagged with satellite transmitters on Taymyr spent winter on the Indian subcontinent. At the time, when some of the tagged peregrine falcons avoided flying across Tibet and the Himalayas, others crossed this high-mountain region, though tried to minimize their efforts with changing speed and deviating from the main route of migration.
Beside study of migration routes of peregrine falcons, the scientists of Yamal observe moves of some other species of birds, such as skua gulls, rough-legged buzzards, sandpipers — phalaropes and dunlins. Also the scientists observe moves of the polar fox tagged with the satellite transmitter of Russian production. The work is being conducted at support of the department on science and innovations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the interregional expedition center “Arctic” and the Russian center for exploration of the Arctic, as the press-service of the governor of Yamal informs.
