The participants of the scientific and research expedition on study of population of gyrfalcons came back to the town Labytnangi. This species of falcons was brought into the Red Books of Russia and Yamal and also to the International Red Book “The Red Data List”.
The scientific group included a researcher of the scientific center for study of the Arctic Alexander Sokolov, an engineer Ivan Fufachev and an ornithologist, a graduate from Perm State University Anton Kushnarev. The chief engineer from the company “Gazpromtrans” Valery Rudkovsky supervised the trip.
The scientists researched 45 bridges and found 6 nests of gyrfalcons. Population of gyrfalcons, which make nests on bridges, has increased in comparison to the last year results. Near three nests the researchers set automatic photo-cameras configured to movements. With help of the cameras the scientists hope to receive unique data about daily activity of the world’s largest falcon and its nutrition. Also the scientists conducted unique researches about influence of climate on nesting habits of the gyrfalcon. One of she-gyrfalcons sat on an egg right on snow, but this attempt was unsuccessful.
The scientists paid special attention to nests of ravens. Gyrfalcons as other species of falcons do not make their own nests, but settle in nests of other birds. A half of 38 found nests of ravens were busy. Comparing the results of their nesting during two years, the scientists confirm increase in the number of couples making nests on 75%, as the press-service of the governor of Yamal informs.
