On the 12th of June Yamal celebrated Russia Day with the whole country. Holiday meetings took place in all towns and districts. People spoke about solidarity and pride of the own country.
In Salekhard town-dwellers came with their families to the main square. Tricolor flags were fluttering in the wind. They reflect the mood of the participants that Russia is true home for many nations.
According to the latest population census, more than 130 nationalities and ethnic groups reside in Yamal. Representatives of the Russian nationality are the most numerous – 61.7%, Ukrainians – 9.7%, Tatars – 5.6%, Bashkir people – 1.6% and Belarusians – 1.3%. Indigenous and ethnic minorities of the North in total make 7.5% of the whole population in the region. At that, 540 thousand people reside in Yamal.
As one of the participants of the holiday activities says, he is happy that he was born in Russia, and Yamal became his home. He has everything here – work, home, family, friends. “Our country passed through many trials, but always came out of them with honor and dignity. Now the strength of our country is also being tested, but they do not know the main thing: the Russians are united and this is our strength”, as he said.
As we should remind, Russia Day is one of the youngest public holidays in the country. On the 12th of June, 1990 the first Congress of people’s deputies of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic adopted the Declaration on state sovereignty of Russia, which proclaimed the supremacy of the Russian Constitution and its laws. By the time many republics of the USSR already took the decision on their sovereignty, so this document was adopted in conditions, when the republics became independent one after another. The adoption of the new name of the country – the Russian Federation (Russia) was an important milestone in strengthening of the Russian statehood. As we should note, on the 12th of June Russia received the first President in addition to independence. The nationwide open presidential election, the first in the history of the country, took place on this day but already in 1991, and Boris Yeltsin won the victory on it. In 1994 he issued the decree and gave the 12th of June the state significance, and the holiday was called the Day of adoption of the Declaration on state sovereignty of Russia.
