Due to its unique location of the Yamal Peninsula may become one of the largest logistic centers in Russia, which will provide year-round transportation of cargoes to world markets via the Northern Sea Route.
It was stated by the head of the International scientific-educational center of the Arctic transport system and technologies of Moscow State University of Railway Engineering Alexander Vylitok. As he notes, Yamal can become the multifunctional terminal opening the shortest way to trade channels in Europe and Asia for all regions of Russia.
“The Yamal Peninsula simultaneously demonstrates urgent need for infrastructural transformation with formed development of transport network”, as he said on the conference in Naryan-Mar. The expert considers that it should be reflected in decisions on the state level on building of the Yamal transport and logistic center of the Northern Sea Route and port objects connected with railroad lines.
Alexander Vylitok adds that the Peninsula will receive special significance after construction of the plant on liquefying of natural gas “Yamal LNG” in Sabetta, the polar seaport of Sabetta and the built international airport, as TASS reports. Construction of the deepwater port in the case of confirmation of its status as multifunctional will have profound positive influence on prospects of the Northern Sea Route, as he explains, adding that construction of the Northern Latitudinal Railway will provide creation of integrated railroad infrastructure by connecting the Northern Railway in the West with the Sverdlovsk Railway in the East. In the future it will connect the Federal transport system with infrastructure of the Arctic zone, will help to preserve transport unity of Russian regions.
The project “Yamal LNG” is being fulfilled on the Yamal Peninsula on the basis of the South Tambey field. The company “Yamal LNG” is the operator of the project. This is the joint business enterprise of NOVATEK — 50.1 percent, the group Total — 20 percent, the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) – 20 percent, and the Silk Road Fund — 9.9 percent. Proven and probable reserves make 926 milliard cubic meters of gas. The plant on liquefying of natural gas is being built in three stages with launching in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The project foresees annual production of about 16 million and 500 thousand tonnes of liquefied natural gas and up to 1 million and 200 thousand tonnes of gas condensate with deliveries to markets of the Asia-Pacific Region and Europe.
