Sportspeople from Yamal will participate in the Arctic Winter Games in Canada

The joint sitting of the International committee of the Arctic Winter Games, the organizing committee and heads of delegations of the Arctic Winter Games 2018 took place in Canada. The participants of the sitting discussed issues on organizing and conducting of the international competitions. Big attention was paid to the schedule of the sports competitions and performances of the groups. The heads of the participating teams got acquainted with basic objects of the forthcoming international holiday of sport and culture of the circumpolar region.
According to the information given to a correspondent of the news agency “Sever-Press” in the regional department of international and external economic relations, the next Arctic Winter Games will take place from the 18th to the 24th of March in the Canadian towns Hay River and Fort Smith.
The team, which includes 70 young sportspeople from Salekhard, Gubkinskiy, Labytnangi, Muravlenko, Nadym, Noviy Urengoy, Noyabrsk and also Priuralskiy, Purovskiy and Tazovskiy districts, will represent Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The young sportspeople of Yamal plan to participate in such kinds of sport as arctic all-around event, running in snowshoes, biathlon (on ski and snowshoes), ski race, table tennis, figure skating and football. 11 coaches will support them. Cultural traditions of the arctic region will be presented by the ensemble of Selkoup songs “Machit Koimy” of the regional center for national cultures. Also national dolls of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North made by craftspeople of the regional House of crafts will be presented on the exhibition.
The Arctic Winter Games has been conducted since 1970 on the territory of Canada, the USA and Greenland each two years. Representatives of such countries of the circumpolar region as Canada, the USA, Greenland, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia become their participants. The team of Yamal has participated in the Arctic Winter Games since 2004, and since 2006 sportspeople of the arctic region have been the only representatives of Russia.
