Students from Finland will learn secrets of bone-carving in Yamal

Two students from Finland arrived to Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug for practical training. They won the grant on the program of the University of the Arctic “North2North”. During three months the girls from the town Inari, Finland will study in Yamal multidiscipline college. They will receive skills of bone-carving and creation of items of decorative and applied art. One of the most famous craftsmen of Yamal Sergey Korolkov will be their teacher.
Both students like studying different cultures and are sure that, owing to joint creative art with people of Yamal, they will be able not only “to conquer” bone-carving but also to speak Russian and also to open secrets of the mysterious Russian soul. The information was given to the news agency “Sever-Press” in the department of international and external economic relations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
The girls study in the Sami Educational Centre in Inari, which is a long-time and reliable partner of members of the University of the Arctic from Yamal. Thus, in 2015 three students of the department “Veterinary” and a teacher of veterinarian disciplines of Yamal polar agro-economic technical school passed practical training on the topic “The system of self-control of a deer slaughter point and a workshop of deer meat boning that meets the EU directives”.
The University of the Arctic is an international network of universities, colleges, research institutes and organizations working in the sphere of education and research activities in the circumpolar North. Officially it was opened in 2001 in Rovaniemi. The motto of the University of the Arctic – “Shared Voices” — clearly conveys its aim: creation of a sustainable and continuously developing circumpolar region through organizing of favorable conditions for northerners in the course of education and knowledge exchange. The agreement between the government of Yamal and the University of the Arctic on cooperation in education, preservation of cultural heritage and socioeconomic development of indigenous peoples of the North is the basis of cooperation between the region and the University. Yamal polar agro-economic college, Yamal multidisciplinary college and also the scientific center for study of the Arctic are members of the University of the Arctic from Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
