Delivery of liquefied natural gas from the plant “Yamal LNG” to China, Yantian and back via the Suez route through Zeebrugge will take 65 days, but on the Northern Sea Route with transshipment in Petropavlovsk-Kamchtsky – 43 days.
This was stated by the head of Atomflot Vyacheslav Ruksha to the newspaper «Kommersant».
According to him, the cost of delivery of one tonne of liquefied natural gas to Japanese Kobe via Zeebrugge makes 96 dollars, via the Northern Sea Route – 58 dollars, to Yantian – 91.5 and 64 dollars respectively. The difference is 20-25 dollars per tonne. According to Vyacheslav Ruksha, this money is enough for normal economic activity of the icebreaking fleet.
As he notes, last year 7 million tonnes of cargos were transported on the Northern Sea Route with help of Atomflot. According to the planned contracts, in 2021 the amount of traffic is expected to grow up to 40 million tonnes per year, and by 2025 — up to 75 million tonnes.
Vyacheslav Ruksha reminds that now the nuclear-powered icebreaking fleet has four icebreakers, three of which should be decommissioned by 2023. Three universal nuclear-powered icebreakers of the new series with the capacity of 60 megawatt – “Arktika”, “Sibir” and “Ural” are being built to replace them. The deadlines are planned for 2019, 2020 and 2021 respectively. In the early twenties it will allow increasing the maximum opportunity for icebreaking support of cargo transportation on the Northern Sea Route approximately up to 40 million tonnes.
