At the conference “Arctic frontiers” in Tromso the president of the Russian Association of indigenous people of the North, Siberia and the Far East Grigory Ledkov participated in the presentation of projects at the local university. He presented the project of the Association on restoration of whitefish stocks of the Ob-Irtysh basin.
To the present day the fishery value of the Ob-Irtysh basin reduced abruptly, fish catches are falling, populations of commercially valuable whitefish species decreased, there is a considerable threat for the muksun, the nelma and the broad whitefish, as the Information center of the Association reports. The fate of the muksun of the Ob River is the most tragic, its livestock ten times decreased over the past ten years.
Fulfillment of the presented project will be significant contribution to embodiment of urgent measures on restoration and increase in the number of valuable whitefish species in the Ob basin. In the future the established biotechnology can be spread in the northern regions.
