Rosatomflot intends to order several tankers, which will transport liquefied natural gas, from Finnish company Aker Arctic Technology, one of the world’s leading developers of icebreakers and ice ships. These vessels are purposed for work on the project “Yamal LNG” and in the future – “Arctic LNG 2”.
On the first stage Aker will perform preliminary engineering design and will conduct ice model tests of a prototype of a new gas carrier. It is supposed that the vessel will have ice class Arc5 and the type and size Yamalmax with the capacity of tanks 170-175 thousand cubic meters of LNG. The type and size was introduced to service the export terminal in the seaport of Sabetta, where the plant “Yamal LNG” is situated.
Rosatomflot counts that such tankers will be able to deliver cargoes of liquefied natural gas to Europe the whole year round, however, being accompanied with an icebreaker. It is noteworthy that ice class of the new LNG-carriers is lower than of those ones, which already work on the project “Yamal LNG”.
Four tankers of the ice class Arc 7 – “Christophe de Margerie”, “Boris Vilkitsky”, “Fyodor Litke” and “Vladimir Rusanov” – currently transport cargoes to European transshipment ports without use of icebreaking support.
The given gas carriers with the capacity of 172 thousand and 410 cubic meters are able to pass the ice with the thickness up to 2.1 meters. It will allow them to navigate during the whole year round not only towards Europe but even on the Northern Sea Route. The ships are able to function normally in temperatures of 50C degrees below zero, as Tekhnoblog (teknoblog.ru) informs.
In total, the project “Yamal LNG” will receive 15 vessels of ice-class Arc7. All of them will be built on South Korean shipyards of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering.
