The Yamal Union of reindeer herders intends to create the database of northern reindeer husbandry of the whole country

This year’s first conference of the board of the Yamal Union of reindeer herders in the new structure took place in Salekhard.
Members of the board of the non-commercial organization discussed the situation in the branch, approved plans of work and distributed directions of activity. To increase quality of life of tundra-dwellers, to bring in different suggestions on improvement of affairs in northern reindeer husbandry the participants took the decision to work on the issue on inclusion of members of the board to public councils under regional departments. This information was given to a correspondent of the news agency “Sever-Press” by the executive director of the Yamal Union of reindeer herders Timur Akchurin.
According to him, the board discussed the project of the unified informational database of northern reindeer husbandry of the Russian Federation. The participants of the conference consider that such database is necessary to create the unified system of registration of animals, statistic registration, operatively to obtain different information touching upon the branch and also to systematize information on indexes in northern reindeer husbandry and to unify these indexes for all reindeer-herding regions of the country. In the opinion of representatives of the public organization, it will serve as obvious substantiation for receiving of necessary measures of state support.
As Timur Akchurin notes, such database will allow seeing the whole picture in the branch, for example, the amount of reindeer meat being procured in the country.
Also the participants of the conference agreed in necessity to bring in changes into the regional law on reindeer husbandry through input of the notion “taiga reindeer husbandry” and later to elaborate the regional program of taiga reindeer husbandry.
As we should remind, the Union of reindeer herders of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug was established in March of 2002 at the founding conference of reindeer herders. The Union consists of about 18 reindeer-herding enterprises and organizations. Its main tasks are: preservation and development of reindeer husbandry as the basis for culture and traditional way of life of indigenous minorities of the North, providing of practical assistance to reindeer-herding enterprises, assistance to improvement of living conditions, medical, commercial and other types of services for reindeer herders and their families. The Union also generalizes and distributes experience of reindeer husbandry in various regions of Russia and the world.
